1970s Fabini Camel Wool Bowler Hat | Pheasant Feather Hatband

$58.5 $111.15
A little Annie Hall. A little English country weekend. Entirely fabulous. Vintage Bowler Hat Details This late-1970s Fabini New York bowler (derby) is crafted in warm camel wool felt and finished with a richly layered pheasant feather hatband in tones of amber, rust, cream, and deep brown. The brim turns up gently all the way around, giving it that classic derby profile—structured, tailored, and just a touch playful.Inside, the hat is stamped Peachfelt by George W. Bollman & Co., Made in U.S.A. Bollman, one of America’s oldest hat manufacturers (founded in 1868), supplied felt bodies for many respected labels. Peachfelt was known for its smooth finish and soft hand while retaining shape beautifully.Fabini pieces were often sold through better department stores in the 1970s—your Hutzler’s ad confirms the timeline perfectly. This is the kind of hat that turns a simple blazer and jeans into a look.Fabini New York bowler/derby, late 1970s.100% camel wool Peachfelt by George W. Bollman & Co.Snazzy pheasant feather hatband.Upturned all around (derby/bowler style).Size: 22″ circumference.Made in U.S.A. Why We Love It:Because 1970s women stole from the boys—and looked better doing it.  This hat has that confident, borrowed-from-the-fellows attitude without losing its polish. The feather band softens the structure just enough. Fabini designs reflected the era’s tailored, menswear-inspired silhouettes—think Annie Hall influence, soft structure, and confident simplicity. While not a couture atelier, Fabini offered well-designed, quality pieces that blended trend awareness with classic millinery forms. This hat features a felt body stamped “Peachfelt — Geo. W. Bollman & Co., Made in U.S.A.” George W. Bollman & Co., founded in 1868 in Pennsylvania, is one of America’s oldest and most respected hat manufacturers. Bollman produced felt bodies and finished hats for many private labels and designers throughout the 20th century. Their Peachfelt line was known for its smooth finish, soft hand, and excellent shape retention.Together, the Fabini design and Bollman craftsmanship represent a strong example of American-made fashion millinery from the late 1970s. WHAT IS A BOWLER/DERBY About Bowler HatsThe bowler, also known as a derby, is a hard felt hat with high domed crown and narrow brim curled at the edges. Created in 1849 by London hat makers Thomas and William Bowler to protect the head while horseback riding. It served as an alternative to the top hat. In America, the bowler — not the cowboy hat — was the most common hat in the Wild West. Cowboys and railroad workers preferred it because it did not blow off the head. Butch Cassidy, Bat Masterson and Billy the Kid wore bowlers. This hat style peaked in popularity at the end of the 19th Century. Charlie Chaplin, surrealist painter Rene Magritte, Liza Minelli’s Sally Bowles in Cabaret, and The Avengers’ John Steed all made the bowler their trademark hat.  From Hatatorium, An Essential Guide for Hat Collectors, 2nd Edition. HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HAT SIZE HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZEPull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size. Then buy a fabulous vintage hat from MadgeSEE OUR HAT SIZING CHART HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR VINTAGE HAT Vintage Hat CareAlways handle vintage hats by the brim, not the crown. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep them in a hatbox or covered with acid-free tissue to prevent dust. Avoid using modern sprays or steam, as these can damage delicate materials and trims. For reshaping or cleaning, it’s best to consult a professional milliner experienced in vintage restoration.
