Wedgwood made this lovely set of fourteen creamware soup plates in England between 1855 and 1859. The border features a continuous grapevine motif with clusters of red and purple grapes, scrolling tendrils, and green leaves. The design was transfer-printed and then colored by hand-applied coloring with enamel, a technique characteristic of mid-19th-century Wedgwood. Narrow brown enamel bands frame the border, adding a crisp finish to the design. The plates are potted in a warm-toned light creamware body typical of Wedgwood’s production in this period.
