Background of Early Coalport Porcelain In Shropshire, England, Coalport was already a center of porcelain and pottery production in 1795 when John Rose founded the Coalport Porcelain factory. Opened in 1792, the Coalport Canal, which joins the River Severn at Coalport, had increased the site’s attractiveness. From 1800 until a merger in 1814, two Coalport factories were operating, one on each side of the canal. Both factories made mostly tablewares with elaborate hand-painted overglaze decoration.
