Background of Spode Josiah Spode I began the company in 1776. He died suddenly in 1797, and his son Josiah Spode II worked to perfect his father’s accomplishments. In partnership with William Copeland, Josiah II continued the business for the next thirty years. Under their management, the company grew to be the largest pottery company in Stoke and a pre-eminent manufacturer of fine ceramics.
