This hat style dates back 5,000 years to Mesopotamia. Paul Poiret popularized them for women in the first decade of the 1900s as a rigid hat with a beehive-shaped crown and no brim. The modern turban was an important design marking the transition from the enormous hats of the decade to the close-fitting cloche of the 1920s. Turbans were very popular through the 1940s.
